An elegant late 19th century Italian shell cameo pendant necklace, finely carved to depict the classical goddess Ceres (Demeter) in profile, her flowing hair adorned with wheat sheaves symbolic of abundance and fertility.

The beautifully executed high-relief shell cameo displays the refined craftsmanship associated with the celebrated Italian cameo workshops of Naples and Torre del Greco, with delicate modelling and strong contrast between the creamy white figure and warm blush-toned ground.

The cameo is housed within a polished gold mount with subtle ropework detailing to the inner border, suspended from a later added gold drop that lends graceful movement and elongation to the piece. Originally conceived as a brooch, the jewel has been thoughtfully adapted for wear as a pendant necklace, offering exceptional versatility and contemporary wearability while retaining its antique character.

The reverse retains the original brooch fitting, while a later added suspension loop allows the piece to be worn effortlessly as a statement pendant.

Romantic, sculptural and highly wearable, this is a striking antique jewel combining Victorian classicism with timeless Italian artistry.
