Large Double-Sided Carved Lapis Lazuli Pendant, Figural Bird Motif, Gold Bail
A substantial carved lapis lazuli pendant of notable scale, worked in relief on both sides with a continuous composition of birds among stylised foliage.
Probably China, late 20th century, executed in the traditional Chinese export carving style. The composition is fluid and well-balanced, with areas of piercing that lend a sense of lightness to an otherwise solid form. Both faces are fully articulated, allowing the pendant to be worn interchangeably—an increasingly uncommon feature in later decorative hardstone work.
The lapis presents a strong ultramarine blue with natural matrix visible in places, consistent with the material. Its thickness and weight give the piece a distinctly sculptural presence when worn.
Fitted with a simple 14k gold stamped bail, likely later, discreetly attached through a drilled aperture.
