ART DECO OPAL & Diamonds Platinum Brooch

This exceptional and original Art Deco brooch centers on a rare 6-plus carat solid opal from the famed Lightning Ridge area of Australia, cut as a broad oval cabochon with vivid peacock greens and blues that shift like light through water. The intense colours are reminiscent of the blue/green sea waters along Sunshine coast in Queensland.

It is an original 1920s piece, in amazing condition given the age, not a later revival, and you can see that in the geometry: no assay marks, but testing as platinum, with diamond set shoulders, crisp, architectural angles, and that unmistakable Deco balance of bold color against precise linework. Overall weight at 9.5 grams.

The translucent opal itself is exceptional—it’s size, measuring 29mm x 16mm x 5.2mm, the clarity and patterning are uncommon, even for period jewels. Observe the slight elliptical shape it has been polished into to ensure maximum colour play. The opal has been examined by our opal cutter/polisher from Austria as a great example from Lightning Ridge Australia and the type dark crystal opal grey base. 10 old cut sparkling diamonds, five on either side of the opal, are set in crisp and well looked after platinum with hardly any wear to mention weigh approximately 0.45carats in total (Est. SI-VS-VVS, H-I-J-K Colour)
