Antique French Diamond, Emerald & Opal En Tremblant Dragonfly Brooch, c.1930–1940
A family heirloom, part of the ‘Garden Collection’ of Jewels we recently acquired, previously owned by an American lady collector.
A striking and finely executed antique dragonfly brooch of impressive scale, crafted in silver-topped gold and dating to the 1930s–1940s, likely of French origin.
The design is naturalistic and highly detailed, with fully articulated wings constructed in the en tremblant manner, allowing subtle movement when worn. This mechanical feature enhances the brilliance of the diamonds and gives the piece exceptional presence.
The wings and body are pavé-set with approximately 251 old-cut and transitional-cut diamonds, totalling approximately 2.20–2.30 carats. The stones display soft, characteristic colour (K–M range) and decorative clarity, consistent with period jewellery, and provide lively sparkle across the surface.
Each wing is accented with round emeralds (8 in total, approx. 2.20–2.30 carats combined), adding contrast and depth. The head is set with two cabochon opals, showing attractive play-of-colour with flashes of green, yellow, blue, and occasional red.
Measuring approximately 8.9 x 10.5 cm (3 1/2 x 4 1/8 inches), the brooch has exceptional scale and visual impact. The reverse displays finely worked gold construction, and the pin fitting is secure and in good working order. The tremblant mechanism remains responsive.
Offered in a period 1940s green velvet presentation case with working lock and key.
